Design:related profile
I was born in Fairbanks, Alaska, and now live in
Austin, TX. I have an MFA in visual communication
from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago,
and a BA with honors in comparative literature from
Princeton University.
I have been working as a graphic designer for ten
years, in the fields of book + publication design,
exhibitions + environments, branding + identity, web,
and print collateral.
I am currently an assistant professor of design at
Texas State University–San Marcos. I have worked as
a designer for the University of Chicago Press and
Studio Blue, and taught at the School of the Art Institute
of Chicago.
My solo and collaborative design work has been
recognized by the AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers show,
the Type Directors Club, STEP magazine, the
Association of American University Presses, Print
magazine's regional annual, the Mohawk Show,
the University and College Designers Association,
and the Chicago Book Clinic.
My work is in the permanent collections of the National
Design Archives, the Rare Book and Manuscript
Collection at Columbia University, and the Joan Flasch
Artists’ Book Collection at the School of the Art Institute
of Chicago. Reviews of my design work have appeared
in I.D. magazine, the New York Times Book Review,
the Daily Telegraph (UK), and Art Monthly.
I also write and design artist's books, which have been
selected for juried shows at Columbia College Chicago's
Center for Book & Paper Arts, Noyes Cultural Arts
Center, and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
I am a "frequent flyer" on Amtrak: Lake Shore Limited,
Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, Texas Eagle, Maple
Leaf, and the Wolverine (which was coincidentally
my junior high school mascot). Still holding out for the
Coast Starlight, someday.
